The three strange stages of recovery

1. You start therapy hoping that your therapist will make the pain go away.

2. At some point you realize that your therapist can’t make the pain go away. Wearily, you start hoping that she will teach you how you can make the pain go away yourself.

3. Later, you realize that the pain will not go away, ever. That pain is a part of life. That all you can do is accept it and deal with it and not run from it, thus making everything worse.

4. Paradoxically, once you’ve got that down, life starts to get better.
